| Holly Vuarnoz is in the final year of a specialized Master's program in Biostatistics. She is writing her Master's thesis under the supervision of Prof. Torsten Hothorn (University of Zurich), Dr. Lucas Kook (Vienna University of Economics and Business), and Dr. Ieuan Clay (ETH Zurich). A four-week research stay at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (March 3–31, 2025) allowed her to deepen her collaboration with Dr. Lucas Kook and develop pioneering approaches for her thesis. The aim was to extend causal models to better understand context-dependent patterns in mental health diagnostics. |
As part of her Master's thesis, Lara Blumenstil is investigating the cognitive flexibility of sulphur-crested cockatoos in Sydney, Australia. Using a “puzzle box” equipped with a touch screen and a food dispenser, wild cockatoos are encouraged to voluntarily learn to distinguish between two different shapes on the screen and to select the correct one to receive a reward. Once this behavior is established, the roles of the shapes are reversed (the “correct” shape becomes “incorrect” and vice versa). Lara Blumenstil aims to determine how long it takes the cockatoos to adapt to the change. Her approach prioritizes animal welfare and allows for the observation of the cockatoos’ behavior in as natural a manner as possible. |
