Keynote by David Bugmann - A living income for cocoa producers in Côte d'Ivoire
Civil society organizations and the governments of the countries of origin of cocoa criticize European chocolate manufacturers for not focusing their programs for sustainable cocoa enough on a living income for producers. However, there are important counter-examples, such as the industry initiative Tony's Open Chain, which is described by NGOs as a sustainability pioneer in the cocoa sector. In my master's thesis in human geography, I investigated the mechanisms through which Tony's sourcing policy influences the income of cocoa farmers. In collaboration with the Centre Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique en Côte d'Ivoire (CSRS), I conducted semi-structured interviews with cocoa producers in Côte d'Ivoire. The main objective of my work was to create practical knowledge for Tony's further efforts to achieve a living income for cocoa farmers.
