Sparse sampling for fast quasiparticle interference imaging
During my Bachelor and Master thesis in condensed matter physics at UZH I was developing a novel measurement protocol for speeding up quasiparticle interference experiments using a scanning tunneling microscope. Grounded on the sparsity-relying theory surrounding compressive sensing, my approach allows for a significant reduction of measurement time. A successful research exchange at Harvard university in 2022 – funded by a Young Researchers Fellowship of UZH Science Alumni – provided me with a valuable opportunity to verify and refine the developed technique.

Kathrin Zbinden
Kathrin Zbinden spent three months in the lab of Prof. Dr. Matthias von Herrath at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego studying the effects of proinflammatory cytokines associated with type 1 diabetes on human pancreatic islet organoids and analyzing the expression of various antigens in samples from newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics as part of a three-month research project for her master's degree in biomedicine.
On December 6, 2023, she will report on her research time and experiences in San Diego.
