Bild und Spiegelbild – Streifzüge durch Chemie, Natur, Kunst und Architektur
Anhand von Beispielen wird das Phänomen der Händigkeit (Chiralität) aus verschiedensten Blickwinkeln betrachtet. Als Erstes werden einige Implikationen der Chiralität für die Molekülwelt besprochen. Thematisiert werden dabei Geruchs- und Geschmacksstoffe, Arzneistoffe sowie Betäubungsmittel. Anschliessend werden händige Strukturen aus dem Pflanzen- und Tierreich vorgestellt. Zum Schluss werden Bezüge zu Kunst und Architektur hergestellt. Demonstrationsmodelle dienen zur Veranschaulichung von Sachverhalten. Chemiekenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich.
Image and Reflection - Forays into Chemistry, Nature, Art and Architecture
Using examples, the phenomenon of handedness (chirality) is examined from various perspectives. First, some implications of chirality for the molecular world are introduced. Odorants and flavorings, drugs and narcotics are discussed. Hand structures from the plant and animal kingdoms are then presented. Finally, references are made to art and architecture. Demonstration models are used to illustrate facts. No knowledge of chemistry is required.

Ab 1986 Oberassistent, ab 1992 Wissenschaftlicher Adjunkt (Senior Scientist) am Institut für Lebensmittel- und Ernährungswissenschaften (Labor für Chemie & Technologie) der ETH Zürich. Dort Dozent für Lebensmittelchemie, Lebensmittelanalytik und Organische Chemie. Von 2014 – 2019, ein Jahr über das Pensionsalter hinaus, Leiter der Abteilung Forensisch-Naturwissenschaftlicher Dienst des Kompetenzzentrums Forensik der Kantonspolizei St.Gallen.

Born in Winterthur. In Zurich: Studied chemistry and obtained a doctorate in organic chemistry. From 1986 Senior Assistant, from 1992 Senior Scientist at the Institute of Food and Nutritional Sciences (Laboratory of Chemistry & Technology) at ETH Zurich. Lecturer in food chemistry, food analysis and organic chemistry. From 2014 - 2019, one year beyond retirement age, Head of the Forensic Science Department of the Competence Center Forensics of the St.Gallen Cantonal Police.
