Insight into the Plant World of Josef Hanel (1865–1940)
The decorative painter and photographer Josef Hanel (1865–1940) has surprised us before. When hand-colored glass slides marked with the mysterious initials "I. H." surfaced in the former Botanical Museum of the University of Zurich, extensive research was needed to identify him as their creator. Now, additional collections have been discovered...
Climate change, the loss of natural habitats, and the decline of biodiversity are urgent global issues. How might Josef Hanel have responded to today's environmental challenges? Can his hand-colored black-and-white photographs of plants, landscapes, and insects inspire us to engage more consciously and sustainably with our environment?
Hanel's unique glass slides provide a wonderful opportunity to highlight the diversity and importance of the plant world.
